Telling their Stories and Giving them a voice
Echoes from the Valley (Television show)
In the fiscal year 2021, we continued to tell the stories of the population we serve through our weekly television show “Echoes from the Valley.” As a program conceptualized to have a multiple-throng approach, we also used the platform to educate, enlighten and engage the communities we serve every episode of the acclaimed TV show.
In line with our mission to galvanize change with this program, we are happy to report that our series on the state of orphanage homes in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital territory which ended with a call to action was heeded by viewers and led to a turnaround for an orphanage as testified by the founder and proprietor as shown in the video below
Engage the Community (Town Hall Events)
Virtual Town Hall Event
That Domestic Violence is prevalent in the African /African immigrant communities is not news. It is also a well-known fact that cultural and religious beliefs prevent victims from speaking up due to several endemic factors. The issue is not also openly discussed within the communities and as a result, victims are unable to access available resources.
With the alarming rise in cases of Domestic Violence in the communities we serve, it became imperative that we use our platforms to educate and enlighten the vulnerable population we serve on the dangers, and resultant effect of Domestic Violence. We also make available, resources with which victims can potentially get needed assistance.
On March 13, 2021, we organized a virtual town hall meeting on the issue, with the theme, Domestic violence, and The African Community. The outcome exceeded our expectation as we had victims speaking up and challenging the cultural, religious, and family influences that shames and prevent victims of domestic abuse from speaking up.
Virtual Launch of Mentorship Program
Be A Mentor / Mentee (BEAM)
On July 10, 2021, we virtually launched our mentorship program BEAM. While the program is aimed at
guiding and building the character, confidence, and leadership abilities of our target population, we also aid our young ladies on college application, career choice / plan, resume / interview preparedness, professional development, job search guide, skills acquisition, cultural competence, entrepreneurship, and good communication skills.
We Addressed Food Insecurity
Community Outreach
At the best of times, food insecurity is a problem all over the world. The Corona virus pandemic and its impact on every area of life made a bad situation, worse. In the bid to help mitigate the sufferings of the population we serve, we introduced the community outreach program where we distribute free groceries, fresh produce, and clothing to people in low-income areas of the Bronx. In the four outreaches we organized in 2021, we served a total of 1,187 people.
Effective July 2022, we will commence a monthly community outreach program in the Village of Elmsford, Westchester. We will do this in partnership with “Feeding Westchester” food bank. Every last Saturday of the month, grocery and fresh produce will be given out to Elmsford residents at the outreach to help address the food insecurity problem in the area.
Orphanage Outreach
The orphanage outreach is one of our major programs in Africa. For this fiscal year, we intervened in four orphanages, distributing groceries, clothing, school supplies and helped restore disconnected power supply. We organized and funded an end-of-the-year party for children in one of the orphanages in Abuja. We introduced the storytelling factor to our orphanage outreach program and to our delight, this brought the much-needed infrastructural support for one of the orphanage homes we serve in Abuja, Nigeria.
