The challenges our target population face during emergencies and disasters was brought home to us in the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The reality that putting food on the table for families in low-income communities is a constant struggle, hit us smack in the face.
The need to fill in the gap and directly impact the communities we serve informed our Community Outreach program. We give out groceries and clothing to people from marginalized communities in the Bronx.
The number of people who turn out at these outreaches further highlights the situation of marginalized people in these communities. Our experience has been that long after the last items are all given out, more and more people show up, hoping to get food for their families.
In July 2022, we entered into a partnership with the “Feeding Westchester” food bank and commenced monthly food outreach in the Village of Elmsford to address food insecurity for the disadvantaged in the community.
