Telling their Stories and Giving them a voice
Echoes from the Valley (Television show)
In fiscal year 2019, we produced and broadcast of our weekly television show through which we give the communities we serve platforms for their voices to be heard and to access information that could potentially improve their quality of lives. Through this informational, enlightening, and educative audio / visual original series, we tell stories of members of the communities we serve while ensuring we make available, information and resources they need at any given time. We showcase talents and artistic work created by members of the communities and share inspiring stories. We interview and have experts speak directly to the population we serve on issues and challenges they grapple with, while encouraging feedback from them. Echoes from the Valley is broadcast on Bronx Community Access Television, channel 65, every Saturday, at 7:30pm, in Africa, on YouTube and various social media platforms.
Empowerment
In line with our goal of empowering people of African descent, a total of twenty-one youths were trained on video production, photography, events planning and editing in Abuja, Nigeria in 2019. Twelve of them were retained as staff of the organization and our partner media companies. The rest were referred to other outlets where they were given employment.
Conference
We successfully hosted of series of conferences and town hall meetings on social injustice issues pertinent to women and children of African descent. Per our belief that women are the gatekeepers of society, we reach out to women through our conferences because an African adage states “Educate a woman and you educate a community.” The mission to end social injustice for the people of African descent is achievable if the women sufficiently educated, informed, and empowered. This informed the creation of the annual Africa Women Conference which again took place in November 2019, with the theme “Building a Coalition to End Gender Inequality in Africa.” Hosted in Marrakech, Morocco with a total of 850 in-person attendees, we reached approximately 4.8million women through our platforms. Africa Women Conference is convened by Echoes Africa Initiatives and Helpline Foundation for the Needy, Abuja.
